How much does 3D printing cost? Understanding the price

The weight of the finished object is not enough to price a 3D print. Two models can use the same amount of plastic but need different printing and preparation times. Here is what goes into the price.

What makes up the printing price?

Material, machine time and preparation. Material consumption may include supports and process waste as well as the finished object. Detail, walls and infill affect machine time alongside size. Preparation means checking the file, placement and selected settings.

Three examples to give you a reference point

These examples use the test settings of 1 October 2026: PLA at HUF 8/gram, PETG at HUF 10/gram and machine time at HUF 600/hour. These are service calculation rates, not filament purchase prices. Material quantities and times are assumed here; they are not measured production data for specific products.

Illustrative calculations using PLA
Assumed job Material Machine time Preparation Total
10 g / 30 minutes HUF 80 HUF 300 HUF 0 HUF 380
50 g / 2 hours HUF 400 HUF 1,200 HUF 60 HUF 1,660
150 g / 6 hours HUF 1,200 HUF 3,600 HUF 380 HUF 5,180

Preparation is 10% of the combined material and machine-time charge above HUF 1,000, capped at HUF 1,000 per project. There is no separate minimum charge in the current calculation. The table excludes shipping and separately agreed additional work and is not a final quote.

A model twice the size does not necessarily cost twice as much

Doubling every dimension increases geometric volume eightfold. Actual material consumption may differ because of infill and walls, but enlargement still makes a substantial difference. Start with the size you actually need, particularly for decorative objects.

Very fine layers can improve detail, but require more layers and longer printing. A simple holder may suit different settings from a figure viewed close up.

What should you send for a precise quote?

  • The existing 3D file or the model source link.
  • Your desired size and quantity.
  • Material and colour preferences, if you have them.
  • The intended use and when you need it.

For multiple plates, the whole project must be considered. For multicolour work, colour-change costs may need separate checking. Read more in the multicolour printing guide .

An estimate is a useful starting point. The final price can be confirmed after checking the model and production settings. The calculator’s price range is not an accuracy guarantee.

How can you reduce costs sensibly?

First decide the size and quantity you actually need. A shelf decoration may not require dense infill or the finest layer height. For a practical object, however, saving material should not compromise the stiffness needed for its purpose. Several identical items may share a plate; any saving depends on the specific project.

For multicolour models, the finished weight alone is not enough to determine the price. Purging and colour-change time also contribute. We therefore check the web estimate separately for colour work.
