PLA or PETG? Choose based on intended use

To choose between PLA and PETG, start with what the object will be used for. Is it an indoor decoration or a holder used every day? Will it be exposed to heat or moisture?

PLA: when appearance and detail matter

PLA is a good starting point for indoor decorations, figures or testing a shape. It can produce fine details and comes in many finishes. It would not be our first choice for heat exposure: the object may deform in a summer car or near a direct heat source.

PETG: when you want to use the object

PETG is generally tougher and more heat resistant, so it can suit holders, covers and practical parts. That does not make every PETG object load bearing or durable in every environment. Design and print orientation matter at least as much as the material name.

Quick comparison

Aspect PLA PETG
Typical use Decoration, figure, visual model Holder, cover, practical object
Heat exposure More sensitive Generally tolerates it better
Impact and bending Can behave more brittly Generally tougher
Fine details Often a good choice Shape and settings also matter

This is general guidance. Materials with the same name from different manufacturers or product families can differ; check the specific filament datasheet for concrete requirements.

Consider these four questions

  1. Where will it be? Indoors, beside a window, in a humid place or outdoors?
  2. What loads will it face? Will it sit on a shelf, support weight, bend or be handled regularly?
  3. What matters most? Colour, finish, detail or practical use?
  4. What does it need to fit? A part that fits an existing component needs dimensions and clearances too.

For example, a drawer organiser may need to fit well and have useful compartments more than it needs a special finish. For a gift figure, details and shade may come first. Describe its use in everyday language; you do not need materials engineering terminology.

It is worth agreeing the colour in advance

Matte, glossy and silk finishes can make the same shape look very different. Screen colours are illustrative, and available shades are agreed before production. For several colours, read our article on colour changes.

You do not have to choose a material at random. On the Contact page , tell us what the object is for and the environment in which it will be used.

Printing it yourself? Check the settings too

The specific product family matters alongside the material name: PLA Silk and PLA Basic have different finishes, while PETG HF and translucent PETG may need different settings. Start with the brief printing advice on the product page and use the manufacturer’s datasheet for the precise profile. Damp filament can harm finish and print reliability.

PLACEHOLDER FOR YOUR OWN PHOTO
Print the same neutral holder in PLA and PETG. Photograph them together, clearly labelled PLA and PETG, under the same lighting.
